The Siderow Fund for New Musicals has a special connection to Oratorio for Living Things, as the piece’s premiere at Ars Nova in 2022 resulted from a commission by the Fund.

Created by Heather Christian, a Drama Desk and two-time Obie Award-winning composer/librettist/performer, Oratorio for Living Things infuses a classical oratorio with a blend of blues, gospel, jazz, and soul to explore the powerful forces that shape the universe and our place within it. Ms. Christian is known for making epic works in small spaces, fueled by her distinct blend of innovation and authenticity and her boundless imagination.

Oratorio for Living Things is a complex, twelve-part harmony piece that embodies themes of the cosmos and the mystery of human existence in an exploration of time, spirituality, and memory – grounding and humanizing these concepts through intimate, personal moments. Oratorio explores what it means to be alive and human, creating a chorus of our collective humanity. This critically acclaimed production carries the intimacy and immediacy of an experiential theatrical event, with vocalists moving throughout the space and among the audience, crafting a meticulously detailed world that spans the entire history of the universe. Rigorously structured and gloriously sung, it is a truly one-of-a-kind theatrical and musical experience.

The upcoming Signature Theatre production was originally commissioned, developed, and produced by Ars Nova, a pioneering platform for new talent that fosters the development of emerging theater, music and comedy artists. In addition to Oratorio for Living Things, the Siderow Fund supported The Lucky Ones by The Bengsons and Sarah Gancher that premiered in 2018, and The Last Medicine Show by Sammy Miller and Kevin Armento, which is in development for production at Ars Nova.

About Signature Theatre

Signature Theatre is an artistic home for storytellers. Founded in 1991 in New York City by Jim Houghton as a theater devoted to artists across their bodies of work, Signature deepens the relationship between artists and audiences alike through their groundbreaking, and ever-evolving, residency and producing model that amplifies the resonances between an artist’s works.

Now under the leadership of Artistic Director Emily Shooltz and Executive Director Timothy J. McClimon, the organization continues to extend residencies to both playwrights and other visionary generative theater artists. Signature makes a singular—and extremely rare, in the theater world—commitment to its diverse cohort of Resident Artists by saying “yes” upfront to at least three productions. At Signature, it’s the storyteller who drives the conversation. That trust, in turn, yields incredible results from artists who are free to take chances and uncover new terrain in their work, while Signature provides holistic creative and professional support.
